Infrastructure Nightmares

I need to give you a little background on Perryville so this will be more understandable. This prison was built in the early
Explaining the Shower Picture
This is an accurate sketch of a real shower in “B” yard, Santa Cruz unit. Do you see the loose wires hanging in the lower door jamb? I was told they were “live” because this shower light is still on. I won’t test this theory! I’ve tried to portray all the standing water in front of those wires. All the shower units have standing water because the drains are all plugged.
Standing water = black mold we see everywhere
When inmates complained about the condition of this shower, they just took off the door and left it open. In the shower next to this one (not pictured) is the same filth.
The regulators (hot and cold) will not engage so moving the handle from Hot to Cold does nothing. The temperature the DOC sets is what you get. In the winter the water is cold and in the summer, it’s hot. The water pressure would increase dramatically if they would soak the shower heads in Lime-aWay to remove 50 years of accumulated minerals.
BREAKING: COIII Amador escorted off San Carlos
An officer confided Amador will be “under investigation for an indeterminate amount of time.”
Medical Off-Site Appointments Being Turned Away
As we have reported in earlier stories, Banner has stopped taking Naphcare insurance. This is another installment in I-dont-believe-they-did-this saga.
From inmate’s email. “I had been waiting four months for an endoscopy. Finally, I knew my appointment was imminent because they made me ‘clean myself out’ the day before. I drank a jug full of liquid that was like a Rotor-Rooter, made to completely clear my colon. The next day, exhausted and weak from the cleanout, with no sleep, and no food, I was forced to walk even though I have a wheelchair chrono to the van.
After an hour and a half of driving, we arrived at Mountain Vista Medical Center. The guard went into the clinic with the paperwork and came out with a shocked look on her face. She said, “No endoscopy is scheduled for today.” My despair was palpable. All the way back to Perryville and all for nothing.
I spoke to Head Nurse Madrid upon my return, and he SHOWED me the email from Mountain View that my procedure was indeed scheduled for today at 11 am. The nurse said it could be a computer error, OR they decided not to take Naphcare insurance after all.
My initial appointment two months ago for this endoscopy was Banner, and they abruptly stopped honoring Naphcare too. It looks like I’ll have to wait to be released and contact the Veterans Association. “
Only ONE Wheelchair Van for All of Perryville?
Reportedly, there is one, made-for-wheelchair/lift-type van in this whole place. Wheelchair-bound inmates say virtually nothing is handicapped accessible in Perryville.
We’ve written before on Medium custody buildings built (1970s) before disability laws were enforced, but Minimum custody units, Carlos, Rosa, and Piestwa, were all built around 2012, so why aren’t they in compliance? The inmates say those units don’t have wheelchair-accessible sinks, water jugs, cubes, shopping, property, and the uneven ground makes riding difficult.
The women complain transport guards are hostile to their needs. One 67-year-old, named CO Gonzales as an example. She says Gonzales is the main Complex transport guard, and he complains constantly about lifting the wheelchairs from his van. This inmate quotes Gonzalez, “Oh you can walk can’t you? Come on, your not going to make me lift this heavy chair and push you to x-ray are you?” Then there are off-site transport officers who badger, threaten, and bodily push the handicapped into the van without taking the wheelchair.
For people with disabilities, the hits just keep coming.
