Infrastructure Nightmares

Introduction to this Topic by the Editor

I need to give you a little background on Perryville so this will be more understandable. This prison was built in the early 1970’s by male inmates, for male inmates. The women didn’t come here until about 1990. AS in all government, the cheapest bid got the job. By all reports, this prison was raised fast, and I suspect, with the minimum of supervision of the builder/inmates. These are eye witness reports from the current women residents.

Explaining the Shower Picture

This is an accurate sketch of a real shower in “B” yard, Santa Cruz unit. Do you see the loose wires hanging in the lower door jamb? I was told they were “live” because this shower light is still on. I won’t test this theory! I’ve tried to portray all the standing water in front of those wires. All the shower units have standing water because the drains are all plugged.

Standing water = black mold we see everywhere

When inmates complained about the condition of this shower, they just took off the door and left it open. In the shower next to this one (not pictured) is the same filth.

The regulators (hot and cold) will not engage so moving the handle from Hot to Cold does nothing. The temperature the DOC sets is what you get. In the winter the water is cold and in the summer, it’s hot. The water pressure would increase dramatically if they would soak the shower heads in Lime-aWay to remove 50 years of accumulated minerals.

Unsafe At Any Speed: DOC Transporting Patients Without Safety Restraints

Unsafe At Any Speed: DOC Transporting Patients Without Safety Restraints

(This recent story was told by the woman transported in the wheelchair compartment of the ADA van.)

“I’m the lady with the broken femur that posted my story earlier in the month. I’m supposed to be getting PT for my leg that was snapped in two, on a regular basis, but it’s irregular at best.

On 7-26-23 Transport officers Cheatham and Castillo were on duty driving the wheelchair-accessible van. Out of the 3 vans like this only one is working…..and it doesn’t work well. That day, three women were going to physical therapy…. me, one from Lumley, and one from Cruz. I was in the wheelchair box.

There are three lights, but only one works so it’s a dark trip wherever you go. No windows. We complained about no air conditioning, so Castillo climbed in to check the vent. She said, ” Well, with my hand right under the vent I feel air.” It felt like a furnace to us.

I can’t believe the Department of Transportation would decide it’s legal and safe to leave three women without seat belts. The officers put the two girls going with me in the back of the van. There are NO SEATS OR SEAT BELTS back there! There is a metal step that was not intended for passengers and has no restraints whatsoever.

If there was a roll over, I’d be flying out of my wheelchair as I’m not strapped in…only the wheelchair is. The two ladies in the back would be flipping over in a metal blender.

Remember, we are chained completely with no ability to break our fall or protect our head in a crash. We’d be toast. So in addition to posting this on a blog, I had my family forward it to the DOT.”

Provider Malcolm to Patient: “You’re a junkie and drug addict, that’s where all your problems are.”

Provider Malcolm to Patient: “You’re a junkie and drug addict, that’s where all your problems are.”

(As we always say….this individual has her 1st Amendment right to free speech. There were no other witnesses to this medical appointment-Ed.)

“I had 2 strokes in county jail prior to Perryville. After the 2nd stroke, I started to have seizures. I had two seizures in R and A, but I don’t think the guard recorded them because I never went to medical.

At San Carlos, I verbally told Provider Malcolm my history. She said she couldn’t access my county records, ” Therefore, you’ll have to have a seizure here before I put you on medicine or give a chrono.” That’s when she said, “You’re a junkie and drug addict, that’s where all your problems are.”.

I told her my strokes were a result of family genetics and high blood pressure. This was a weird comment she made, ” You have high cholesterol because you’re white.” Then I told her it wasn’t safe for me to work in Complex Kitchen because of my seizures, and she said, “If I had a dollar for every excuse I heard from an inmate I’d be rich. My superiors have told me no chronos for anyone in complex kitchen because you all make up excuses.”

(This website hopes this story is an anomaly and not indicative of Carlos’ new provider.)

7-25-23 Governor Hobbs Comes to Perryville

7-25-23 Governor Hobbs Comes to Perryville

Governor Hobbs made an unannounced visit to Lumley Unit to see for herself what pain and suffering the women have been subjected to. Reportedly, she spoke to the inmates for a long time.

At the same time her Chairman of Oversight Committee, and other state officials visited Cruz. Allegedly, DW Salas of Cruz tried to put ice blocks on the swamp coolers, but only succeed in blowing the belts and shutting down the coolers completely.
