Infrastructure Nightmares

I need to give you a little background on Perryville so this will be more understandable. This prison was built in the early
Explaining the Shower Picture
This is an accurate sketch of a real shower in “B” yard, Santa Cruz unit. Do you see the loose wires hanging in the lower door jamb? I was told they were “live” because this shower light is still on. I won’t test this theory! I’ve tried to portray all the standing water in front of those wires. All the shower units have standing water because the drains are all plugged.
Standing water = black mold we see everywhere
When inmates complained about the condition of this shower, they just took off the door and left it open. In the shower next to this one (not pictured) is the same filth.
The regulators (hot and cold) will not engage so moving the handle from Hot to Cold does nothing. The temperature the DOC sets is what you get. In the winter the water is cold and in the summer, it’s hot. The water pressure would increase dramatically if they would soak the shower heads in Lime-aWay to remove 50 years of accumulated minerals.
Adult Protective Services Just Like the DOC?
A recent article in the Republic said about APS, “Numerous gaps were found in the state system of providing protection to vulnerable adults who are unable to protect themselves because of physical or mental impairment, or they are incapacitated.” “Allegations of abuse, neglect, and exploitation.” “Re-traumatized by the system intended to protect them.” Gee, that sounds like what the DOC does to its elderly, mentally ill, disabled, and incapacitated at Perryville!! The. same. exact. thing.
It’s time to FIRE OFFICER CHEATHAM!!
We have received many, many complaints about this transport officer. It’s time to put his name on the internet and let Dr. Thornell know that this is the type of guard that risks lives. Reportedly, he has always been known for his erratic and dangerous driving, even by his co-workers. We did receive two recent grievances from residents that we will print excerpts from. Ms. M and Ms. L respectively.
“On 10-11-23 I had a physical therapy appointment and was picked up by transport officers Cheatham and Hernandez. I felt like Hernandez did a good job of securing my wheelchair in the ADA compartment. COII CHEATHAM was the driver, and he drove so fast and erratic that I was jerked all over the place. At one point he took a corner so fast that my wheelchair was tilted on two wheels! I could hear the helpless cries of the two girls in the back of the van. When we arrived at the PT place I told Cheatham that his driving was scary and unprofessional. He made a snide remark, and in retaliation for my comment, he put my wheelchair in a corner with me facing the wall. Like a 3-year-old! He drove even worse on the ride back if that was possible.”
Ms. L has her say: “I am the woman that was sucked into the MRI machine and my story had been on the news the night before. I knew Hernandez and Cheatham recognized me because I heard them talking about it. Ms. M had been secured in the ADA compartment, so us two PT patients were put in the bench seat in the back of the van. We were only secured with a lap seat belt. The wall behind us is curved so we can’t sit straight up, we spend the ride hunched over. There is no way to brace myself as I am chained from hand to foot. COII Cheatham drove like a madman…starting and stopping with a jerk, turning corners fast, hitting every pothole, which resulted in me sliding all over and hitting my head on the walls.
When we got to Simon Med COII CHEATHAM had the nerve to ask ME if I was going to push the patient in the wheelchair into the building! I told him that was his job. I told my physical therapist what happened, and why I was barely able to do my exercises. He agreed to help me arrange for any other transport but the ADA van. I can’t prove it, but I felt like Cheatham was retaliating against me for my TV story.”
Another Inmate FICO Goes Down In Flames!
We’ve been writing about the for-profit healthcare vendors destroying inmates’ credit scores since our inception. Instead of getting better, it gets worse.
Here’s our latest example….. Ms. M. In 2021 she was sent by ambulance to Abrazo West Valley Hospital for cardiovascular problems. After several months she received a bill for $2,715.70 with a note, “unpaid amount after insurer denied”. The insurer was Centurion, the agent the DOC contracted with to give its citizens subpar health care.
Two years and seven grievances later, Ms. M is no closer to resolving this issue that has eroded and destroyed her credit. Is this the REENTRY help the DOC has in its name? She is about to be released, how will she get shelter with a credit score like that?
Ms. M is a ward of the state and is not responsible for her medical bills. No COIII could be bothered calling the collection agencies to explain she is incarcerated. This was the last entry from her appeal from the top gun at medical: ” The previous medical vendor was Centurion. We transitioned to Naphcare 2022 and we don’t have access to their claim system to resolve. The DON wanted you to know the process should you want to advocate for yourself. Decision Resolved.” Who is DON?? It sounds like the Mafia.
This woman got absolutely NO HELP FROM THE DOC. As usual.
