Introduction to this Topic by the Editor
I need to give you a little background on Perryville so this will be more understandable. This prison was built in the early
Explaining the Shower Picture
This is an accurate sketch of a real shower in “B” yard, Santa Cruz unit. Do you see the loose wires hanging in the lower door jamb? I was told they were “live” because this shower light is still on. I won’t test this theory! I’ve tried to portray all the standing water in front of those wires. All the shower units have standing water because the drains are all plugged.
Standing water = black mold we see everywhere
When inmates complained about the condition of this shower, they just took off the door and left it open. In the shower next to this one (not pictured) is the same filth.
The regulators (hot and cold) will not engage so moving the handle from Hot to Cold does nothing. The temperature the DOC sets is what you get. In the winter the water is cold and in the summer, it’s hot. The water pressure would increase dramatically if they would soak the shower heads in Lime-aWay to remove 50 years of accumulated minerals.

Breaking News: Air conditioning ON at Santa Cruz!
We received wonderful word that Cruz had full a/c in A, B, and C yards, with D to start shortly. The emails are somewhat funny, in that most post “It’s FREEZING in here!” and “I had to unpack my thermals, LOL!”. Reportedly, contractors are working at “a feverish ” pace to get a/c in B, C, and D yards on Lumley. Congratulations gals!!!!

I Walked the Air Force Veteran to the Gate
(Email from Carlos woman about the trials of the 66-year-old we previously wrote about.) “I’ve known Sue for 14 years, we’ve been in the trenches together all over Perryville, medium and minimum custody. I remember a vibrant redhead, very articulate, but shocked by prison because she (like me) had no priors, not even a parking ticket.
Her life on the outside had been harsh however, she had been the victim of a horrific crime. Sue’s assailant had beaten her so badly that she died on the table 3 times. I saw pictures of her smashed head in the ER and it resembled an eggplant, not a human face. As a result of her injuries, she was labeled Severely Mentally ill.
Later she found herself in an abusive relationship where she was subjected to more physical trauma. One day that abuser tried to kill her, and she fought back. As you may know, there is no such thing as “self-defense” in Arizona, so when her abuser died Sue was sent to prison for 15 years flat time.
As we all know, there is no rehabilitation at the DOC. Sue endured more trauma and abuse at the hands of the state for her entire sentence. The woman I walked to the gate now wears diapers, uses a cane, is emaciated and shrunken, has a titanium rod in her leg, and has a vacant look in her eye. She has had her spirit beaten out of her, and untold years taken from her lifespan, due to toxic water, cigarette smoke, substandard health care, and slop for food.
Even her journey out of captivity was not helped by staff of the DOC. Sue’s COIII, who is supposed to start this process 6 months from release, never helped her. He seemed annoyed she had no family, no income, or any place to go after her incarceration. (Sue’s only child died from a drunk driver while she was in prison). This COIII told Sue to research halfway houses on her own. 60 days to the gate he finally gave her a government ID, but did not assign a parole officer until 24 hours prior to leaving. She was on her own trying to get out of here.
Was there any mental health care for this SMI-institutionalized individual? Hell no! Had Sue ever in 15 years been put in a major program? ANY program? Again, hell no. The world has changed dramatically in 15 years, did they give her any reentry counseling? Oh, wait…that’s in the name, right? Rehabilitation and Reentry? Yeah. Sue was put out the door like yesterday’s trash. She had been out of her psych meds for 9 days, and was in the throes of severe withdrawal, throwing up, diarrhea, and hallucinations.
Nice job ADCRR….. you’re the king of elderly abuse!”

Will They Kill This Veteran Before They Release Her?
Sixty-six-year-old Air Force veteran has 48 hours to her release. Over a week ago No-Care Naphcare stopped her powerful depression/anxiety medication cold turkey. She is now suffering hallucinations, diarrhea, shaking, mental fog, and hearing voices. With less than 48 hours to the gate, she can’t focus on what to or what to take with her. She has decided after 15 years of torture, to bring her pillow and medication…. provided medical gives her the mandated 30-day supply.
One woman recently was waiting to leave the prison, and her parole officer was waiting in his car, but she had to serve an additional 24 hours in Perryville because medical FORGOT her meds!
Advocates are standing by trying to get a hold of the DW to bring our veteran her critical prescription. Stay tuned.
What Perryville Has in Common with Florida Condo Disaster
Thanks to all the structural engineers on CNN, we now know what to call the crumbling concrete in Peaville..... spalling. Spalling starts when the concrete is exposed to wet conditions repeatedly, and the rebar that gives the concrete stability rusts. The rust causes...
10 Ambulances in 24 Hours at Peaville!
We've had multiple reports from families and staff, about the brutal heat emergencies in the women's prison. A staff member at Lumley Unit said three 911 calls were issued in two hours! A woman allegedly broke her ankle on one of the yards, trying to fix swamp...
More Older Women and Longer Sentences – AZDOC winning the wrong competitions
Women in AZ spend far longer in prison than women nationally. These additional months and years are not making Arizona safer. The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that longer sentences do not make people less likely to commit a crime in the future. Recidivism is...
Diabetics in Danger for Their Health on Lumley
Due to DW Bendel's rules about 'escorting' women everywhere, we have letters from diabetics warning of serious consequences to their health. Even in the midst of a critical staff shortage, Bendel insists on a guard to go with the women everywhere. Diabetics must be...
The AZ Legislature Gave Women Prisoners Tampons
Thanks to the 'Dignity for Incarcerated Women Act,' women will now be guaranteed a decent supply of feminine hygiene products. The new law also bans the shackling of pregnant women and allows new mothers 72 hours time with their newborns after birth. In a more...
Arizona Imprisons Women at Twice the Rate of Other States
This does not reflect women committing more crime, it is the result of the Republican driven legislative policies for 1st time and nonviolent offenses. Today, women make up 10% of the Arizona's prison population, compared to 7% in other states. Additionally, the...
DW Bendel voted worst in Perryville!
Boy, have we got letters on this dude....and not just from inmates...his staff hate him too. Bendel is the only DW continuing the draconian 'escorting' of inmates everywhere they go. Santa Cruz and Santa Maria, the other medium custody units, have discontinued the...
DOC screws up again!
Can these clowns do anything right? This April the DOC said they were ready to resume executions, and spent $1.5 million for the drugs to carry them out. Authorities now admit they were wrong about how long these lethal cocktails would last. Arizona's Attorney...
Don’t let the DOC execute your women this way!
These assholes can't do anything correctly. Read the whole story in Arizona Republic newspaper, 6-7-21.---Ed. Lawyers for death row inmates found documents showing the DOC purchased the wrong kind of gas chamber chemicals. They bought potassium cyanide instead of...
Staff: ‘Prison not following protocol when women are maced
A staff member that works regularly at LDU (detention unit), alleges that 3 women came in this month that were covered in mace, and not washed off after being restrained at their respective units. He says policy requires that the woman is washed off in the shower...
How Companies Make Money Off Perryville Residents
Prisoners are worth a lot of money to companies that make money from punishment. There is a price tag on their heads. Companies like prison telecoms, Securus, IC Solutions food service, Trinity, Keefe. Financial services like Securus and JPay charge outrageous fees...
Short Staff Problems
The DOC is woefully short-staffed on guards. Many mistakes are made and communication is problematic at best. Every day on every unit in Perryville, they run around like crazy trying to staff the 6 am to 2 pm shift. Many a day, inmates don't get out at 6 am because...
