Infrastructure Nightmares
Introduction to this Topic by the Editor
I need to give you a little background on Perryville so this will be more understandable. This prison was built in the early
Explaining the Shower Picture
This is an accurate sketch of a real shower in “B” yard, Santa Cruz unit. Do you see the loose wires hanging in the lower door jamb? I was told they were “live” because this shower light is still on. I won’t test this theory! I’ve tried to portray all the standing water in front of those wires. All the shower units have standing water because the drains are all plugged.
Standing water = black mold we see everywhere
When inmates complained about the condition of this shower, they just took off the door and left it open. In the shower next to this one (not pictured) is the same filth.
The regulators (hot and cold) will not engage so moving the handle from Hot to Cold does nothing. The temperature the DOC sets is what you get. In the winter the water is cold and in the summer, it’s hot. The water pressure would increase dramatically if they would soak the shower heads in Lime-aWay to remove 50 years of accumulated minerals.
I Walked the Air Force Veteran to the Gate
(Email from Carlos woman about the trials of the 66-year-old we previously wrote about.) “I’ve known Sue for 14 years, we’ve been in the trenches together all over Perryville, medium and minimum custody. I remember a vibrant redhead, very articulate, but shocked by prison because she (like me) had no priors, not even a parking ticket.
Her life on the outside had been harsh however, she had been the victim of a horrific crime. Sue’s assailant had beaten her so badly that she died on the table 3 times. I saw pictures of her smashed head in the ER and it resembled an eggplant, not a human face. As a result of her injuries, she was labeled Severely Mentally ill.
Later she found herself in an abusive relationship where she was subjected to more physical trauma. One day that abuser tried to kill her, and she fought back. As you may know, there is no such thing as “self-defense” in Arizona, so when her abuser died Sue was sent to prison for 15 years flat time.
As we all know, there is no rehabilitation at the DOC. Sue endured more trauma and abuse at the hands of the state for her entire sentence. The woman I walked to the gate now wears diapers, uses a cane, is emaciated and shrunken, has a titanium rod in her leg, and has a vacant look in her eye. She has had her spirit beaten out of her, and untold years taken from her lifespan, due to toxic water, cigarette smoke, substandard health care, and slop for food.
Even her journey out of captivity was not helped by staff of the DOC. Sue’s COIII, who is supposed to start this process 6 months from release, never helped her. He seemed annoyed she had no family, no income, or any place to go after her incarceration. (Sue’s only child died from a drunk driver while she was in prison). This COIII told Sue to research halfway houses on her own. 60 days to the gate he finally gave her a government ID, but did not assign a parole officer until 24 hours prior to leaving. She was on her own trying to get out of here.
Was there any mental health care for this SMI-institutionalized individual? Hell no! Had Sue ever in 15 years been put in a major program? ANY program? Again, hell no. The world has changed dramatically in 15 years, did they give her any reentry counseling? Oh, wait…that’s in the name, right? Rehabilitation and Reentry? Yeah. Sue was put out the door like yesterday’s trash. She had been out of her psych meds for 9 days, and was in the throes of severe withdrawal, throwing up, diarrhea, and hallucinations.
Nice job ADCRR….. you’re the king of elderly abuse!”
Will They Kill This Veteran Before They Release Her?
Sixty-six-year-old Air Force veteran has 48 hours to her release. Over a week ago No-Care Naphcare stopped her powerful depression/anxiety medication cold turkey. She is now suffering hallucinations, diarrhea, shaking, mental fog, and hearing voices. With less than 48 hours to the gate, she can’t focus on what to or what to take with her. She has decided after 15 years of torture, to bring her pillow and medication…. provided medical gives her the mandated 30-day supply.
One woman recently was waiting to leave the prison, and her parole officer was waiting in his car, but she had to serve an additional 24 hours in Perryville because medical FORGOT her meds!
Advocates are standing by trying to get a hold of the DW to bring our veteran her critical prescription. Stay tuned.
Yes, Perryville Water Is As Bad As We Thought It Was
An article by the Arizona Republic on 6-6-24, confirms what residents have known for years….the tap water is toxic. There have been warning signs displayed for outside people coming into the Complex, “Don’t drink the water.” Which prompted visitors to question why if it’s not safe for me to drink, is it OK for my daughter to drink? Officers without exception carry bottled water with them to work.
The EPA releases test data every 3 months regarding tap water around Luke Air Force Base. The water has toxic chemicals that take centuries to break down, called PFAS or “forever chemicals”. These toxins build up in human bodies increasing cancers and other serious health complications.
The result of the test closest to Perryville was PFOS level 11.7 ppt, 2.9 times above the limit. Our blog advocates for Perryville residents to get free bottled water from the state, like their sisters in California prisons get!
Why Does Santa Cruz Unit Look Like Eastern Ukraine?
Here is another eyewitness account of what Marian's saw when they arrived at Cruz. "There are 4 yards on Cruz unit, A,B,C, D. Charley yard had been Closed Custody for 3 years, so we weren't expecting the Ritz, but we weren't prepared for what we saw. At first glance I...
How Long Does It Take For The DOC To Cross The Road?
The prison decided to close down the Maria unit to save on staff. At the same time, they admitted their mistake 3 years ago, and that was to put Closed Custody on Medium yards. Apparently, they forgot the old adage of "One bad apple spoils the whole barrel.". So they...
Is DOC Bipolar?
Santa Maria unit has had conflicting news about its fate for months now. A prison runs on rumors, but all reports point to an entity that has no clue about what's going on. Recently, in one day, there were 3 different announcements regarding the closing of Maria and...
DOC BANS COLORING BOOKS!
Really? I almost don't know what to say about this one. Of course, we did due diligence trying to find an answer from the prison as to WHY. And we received the usual reply....silence, or shrug, or I dunno. Coloring is a well-known stress reliever, many inmates come to...
Your Blood Never Lies
I have always been skeptical of how much "stress" affects one's health. Well, I'm a believer now. I have empirical evidence of my own blood lab work. If you read the articles about how bad Lumley Unit treats its residents, you can understand the major STRESS the women...
Trinity’s BAIT and SWITCH
The Keefe/Trinity Corp has found yet another way to scalp inmates of their precious few dollars. Not happy with a complete monopoly on food that inmates have no choice but to consume, but they want MORE money for their "restaurant meals". Billed as restaurant quality,...
Prison Budget Hits New Record!
The Governor is asking for more than $1.5 BILLION for Arizona's prisons, and the final request will be even more than that, because it does not factor in prison health care, running more than $200 Million annually. Big-ticket infrastructure items include $42 million...
Chucky Cheese Ryan was Drinking Before Police Standoff
The man who made so many women miserable in Perryville for 10 long years, is in legal trouble himself. The former Director of the AZDOC was drinking heavily the night he discharged a pistol in his bathroom. Ryan's wife told police her husband drank half a large bottle...
Chucky Ryan gets special treatment from Tempe police
(Arizona's Republic star reporter, Jimmy Jenkins, has kept up on this story.) When most folks point a gun at police, they're either shot or booked in jail. That's not what happens when you're the former Department of Corrections Director.... he gets handled with kid...
Taliban Bendel Continues to Make Women’s Life Miserable
We received so many emails and letters from Lumley Unit, we're going to split it up into short, individual, stories. #1. "I thought this new dude, Deputy Warden Bendel, would make his draconian rules temporary. Rules like being escorted everywhere by a staff member....
Quick summary of Jensen v. Shinn trial
(For gavel to gavel coverage, see Jimmy Jenkins reporting for the Arizona Republic.) Psychologists, wardens, medical workers, and the prisoners themselves, testified for a month in this health care trial. On the last day of the trial, the court heard from Centurion's...
Lumley Unit
300 women ask to leave Lumley: Like lemmings to the sea, these gals fought to get out of Lumley. The opportunity arose when the COIV asked for volunteers to transfer to another Unit, like Santa Cruz. This COIV was inundated and overwhelmed with requests! This should...
