No one wants to live there, and those that do, want to get out as fast as possible. Let’s compile a list and go into more detail later:
- No IHP BBQ’s
- Cancel fundraisers and events as punishment
- Shakes as punishment (20 in a year vs the usual
- Constant lockdowns
- Lights as punishment
- No microwave replacement as punishment
- No birthday parties in the Rec room
- No puppy programs
- Absolutely no art area, like Lumley’s Art of Soul, or Cruz’s ASU Hub.
IHP BBQ’s were supposed to be quarterly and at no or minimum cost to the inmate. Carlos had ONE in 2024 and that was a cardboard hamburger. DW Jones told us how lucky they were to get that. The reason given for most of the punishment is mainly two Overdoses and not going to work at Complex Kitchen.
Why does DW Anthony Jones punish EVERYONE for what a few do? It’s an age-old question of this prison system. Why not just punish the people who break the rules? The majority of citizens of Carlos do not work at Complex Kitchen, nor do they indulge in illegal drugs, but they are punished every day for other’s sins.
Monthly Fundraisers are something the residents look forward to, but these too are taken away, as are special events.
Shakes are the DW’s favorite “go-to” for anything, real or imagined, that irritates him. A shake is legal burglary. They lock the women down, strip them naked of their clothes and dignity, and then after about 4 or 5 hours they get to come back to their cube, the tiny space they call home, to a total trashed mess. The male (they’re male because all the female guards were used striping) guards tossed their bedding on the floor, threw all possessions on the floor, don’t care if they break the TV, take personal cards and pictures and throw them in the trash. The women feel VIOLATED because they have been.
The yard is supposed to be open at 5 am, but most days it doesn’t open until 8 am. This is problematic for gals that work a 40-hour week and just want to get out early to exercise—three hours taken from their rec time every day. Why? “Because kitchen workers won’t go to work”.
Russia uses lights as punishment in their prisons. Maybe Jones studied over there? Only Carlos uses lights to irritate and punish its residents. Pie/Rosa has tiny red lights in the bay and the bathrooms at night. At count, they blink the lights off in the bathrooms so you’ll know it’s count. The guard uses a penlight to mark people off on his clipboard…. no white lights blaze on like Carlos. No huge flashlight in your eyes like Carlos. No kicking the beds to wake you up like Carlos. No sleep deprivation like Carlos. During the day Pie/Rosa uses the skylights and does not turn on one single white florescent bulb until 5 at night. At Carlos every bulb in the house is burning all day….it’s like living on the surface of the sun.
When a microwave goes out Jones won’t replace it. He makes them use the old-fashioned hot water heater element, called a “stinger”.
Don’t we love camping Tony? Day Room or Rec room is a small room inside the bay meant for recreational pursuits. Historically, that has been a prep center for meals and party central for birthdays etc. Tony’s new edict came out on 1-4 ” It has come to my attention that inmates are abusing the day room by using them for parties. Inmates are only allowed to use the day room to watch sporting events with written approval from the DW. Any further abuse of day rooms will result in a disciplinary and suspension of day room use. I have instructed my staff to be extra vigilant.” OMG abuse of the day room?! Horrors! And by cooking! Oh, that will never do…tsk tsk. A party is anti-rehabilitation! Tony’s world will end if Carlos girls have one shred of happiness!
No puppy program. This was sad, the women really wanted this one. Why? 1) Carlos is “too big”. 2) The puppies might eat the drugs. (We laughed too until we realized they were serious.)
There is NO ART ON CARLOS. It is forbidden. Lumley has Art of the Soul, which is a large converted kitchen building, repurposed for art and craft projects. The pictures of it are just gorgeous. Santa Cruz has the ASU Hub, which is another revamped room for amazing art studies. The women take art classes there and have a place to relax from prison stresses. Pie/Rosa has long tables in their art room with free supplies on the honor system. A very creative place.
So there you have Tony’s Little Russia, known as Carlos. We will do everything we can to call Ryan Thornell’s attention to the worst Deputy Warden to ever walk planet Earth…..Tony Baloney.
